10 ways to stay out of the ER this holiday season

Surrey, BC - Dr. Urbain Ip wants YOU to stay out of the ER this holiday season. The holidays traditionally are a very busy time in the Emergency Department. Some of those visits to the hospital can easily be prevented.

In addition to being Surrey Memorial Hospital's medical director, Dr. Ip works in its ER - the busiest one in B.C. Here is Dr. Ip's top 10 list of holiday hazards:

  1. Beware of black ice when driving. If you hit a slippery section and don't have an anti-lock brake system, pump your brakes to regain control rather than slamming them. Many people wind up in the Emergency Department with injuries sustained in traffic accidents.
  2. Be careful when walking in icy conditions.
  3. Use caution on ladders while putting up Christmas decorations. Wear footwear with a strong tread and, if possible, enlist a 'spotter' to hold the ladder steadily for you. Don't ever stand on the top step.
  4. Protect your family from carbon monoxide poisoning. Have your fuel-burning appliances inspected annually, and follow instructions.
  5. Keep a watchful eye on children when around the Christmas tree. Do not let them play with the wiring or lights.
  6. Keep small children away from hot liquids, stoves, heaters and fireplaces. Store matches and lighters out of the reach of children.
  7. Use alcohol sensibly, and plan your ride home before the festivities begin.
  8. Avoid the stress involved in shopping. Take advantage of the extended shopping hours and do your shopping early in the morning or later in the evening when stores are quieter.
  9. Watch for choking hazards in holiday packaging if small children are around. Many toys have tape, twist-ties, small batteries, etc., they can swallow.
  10. Be cautious when skiing and snowboarding. Wear protective gear and a helmet when riding that new skateboard or bicycle.

Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation helps fund the hospital's urgently-needed equipment each year. In addition, the Foundation has set a goal of $15-million for its Emergency Centre Campaign, which will officially launch in the spring of 2007. The $15-million will ensure the hospital's new Emergency Centre is state-of-the-art.
