October 29, 2007 Kumon students’ success translates into Emergency Centre donation Surrey, B.C. – Achieving honour roll status means more than good grades for 212 Surrey students. It also means more than $3,100 towards Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Emergency Centre Campaign. Local educators Arlene and Charles Miljure spearheaded the initiative by donating $10 for each honour roll student from the Guildford and Fleetwood Kumon Centres. Kumon parents also contributed to the cause, with $3,131.75 sent to Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation in support of the children’s E.R. that will be part of the hospital’s new Emergency Centre. Kumon is an after-school math and reading program. Founded in Japan in 1958, the Japanese-based learning method uses a systematic approach that helps children develop a solid command of math and reading skills. Through daily practice and mastery of materials, students increase confidence, improve concentration and develop better study skills. The new Emergency Centre, at triple the size of the current facility, will include a separate children’s E.R., as well as a separate mental health and addictions area, an enhanced minor treatment unit, and an improved area for acute patients. |
