SMH Auxiliary provides more than $62,000 in patient comfort items

Surrey, B.C. – Surrey Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has delivered an early Christmas gift that will help patients in four of the hospital’s departments.

By working with Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Auxiliary has identified more than $62,000 in patient comfort items for stroke rehabilitation, surgery, geriatrics and end-of-life programs.

“The Auxiliary’s longstanding dedication to the hospital goes back more than 60 years,” says Foundation Chair Ron Knight. “This is only the latest example of the phenomenal contribution this group of volunteers is making on Surrey Memorial.

The Auxiliary’s latest donation, approved December 19 by its Executive, will help refurbish a surgical patient lounge, provide chairs for relatives of patients in geriatrics and palliative care, purchase tools to help stroke patients rehabilitate, and obtain several other items for the hospital.

Surrey Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has raised more than $4 million for the hospital since 1947. In recent years, the Auxiliary contributed $1 million towards the hospital’s Children’s Health Centre that opened in 2001 and $1 million for the new Emergency Centre that will open in 2013. Earlier this year, the Auxiliary pledged a further $250,000 during the Foundation’s 100 Days to Give Campaign.

The Auxiliary raises money through its Penny Savers’ Thrift Store, hospital-based gift store, lottery booth & mobile retail cart, and through gaming proceeds.

Established in 1992, Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation has raised more than $55 million to purchase medical equipment, fund innovative programs, and support training and research.
